You can tithe and still be broke?! Yes I said it. I am a tither and have been for years. I am a Christian and believe to just give your life to God and not trust Him with your money is crazy and weird. The truth is, it’s not God we tend not to trust, it’s the church, the Board of Directors, the preacher in the pulpit whom we assume steals the money or is overpaid for what he or she does every Sunday Morning. Don’t worry we will get to all of that in due time. WARNING/DISCLOSURE: I am not a Pastor, I am not paid by ANY pastors. I am faithful member of a well-known and beautiful church of which I am so proud. We (my husband and I) moved to the city specifically to become members of our mega church. It is blessed us in so many ways and our spiritual, physical, mental, relational, financial growth has been amazing. I share because I understand the questions from the community, I can relate to the member who is unsure of what is right and I have been the board of director, director of finance for the small church before.
Where were we? Yes you can tithe and still be broke. I love church and you know in the church where We expect God to do miracles (and trust me HE DOES), just not always the way we would want them to be presented. Too often in church we look for the crazy miracles that require little to no work on our behalf. Totally unrealistic. Any growth that you the individual will have and it doesn’t require you to be an active participant, It isn’t real growth and financial growth is no different.
Tithing isn’t a lucky charm, a get rich quick scheme and because you tithe doesn’t mean you will not be broke. Now God will always honor HIS commitment. That’s never the issue. Malachi says that He will: 1)He will open you the windows of heaven, and pour you out a blessing, that there shall not be room enough to receive; 2) He will rebuke the devourer for your sakes, 3) He shall not destroy the fruits of your ground; and 4)Neither shall your vine cast her fruit before the time. Despite God’s promises of God for tithing, one cannot think that he or she have no financial responsibility.
I’ve heard sooooooooooooo many testimony services of people stating that they went out, laid hands on a car and bought it no money down. A few months later when the payments weren’t made, I’ve heard them say the devil took my car. Now keeping it real, the enemy (devil) doesn’t require a vehicle to get around, taking your car does nothing. I do know that qualifying for a car doesn’t mean that one can afford the car, those are two different things. In other words, tithing in no way implies that you can have every desire or go out spend too much money and tithing insurance will cover it. Sounds comedic but many people operate in this matter. When people, saints, church folk give or feel an expectation of prosperity they tend to do or acquire things to prove that God came through even when they cannot afford it.
God doesn’t need our help nor a fancy lifestyle to prove that HE honors HIS Word. Ignoring financial responsibility, buying any and everything desired to keep up “the Joneses”, will keep one broke and missing the opportunities provided by God. Opportunities from God come in seed form to be developed, groomed and manifested. Too many things, material things are called blessings when they were purchased with money that one didn’t have! That’s being a poor steward. In most cases, this type of behavior is fueled by a need to display to people that one is blessed! Being blessed is sooooooooo far above money!
So yes, You can tithe and be broke but the downfall is not on God it lies in your Stewardship, your faithfulness over what God has given you. Watch over your blessings either your actions will allow them to increase or decrease.
