“R-E-S-P-E-C-T, find out what it means to me”, some of the most beautiful lyrics sang by the Queen of soul, Aretha Franklin. Respect, a word most often used but least understood. The lyrics of the song couldn’t be more accurate. Respect a common word, an essential thought, a ‘must have’ in ANY relationship; parent-child, husband-wife, siblings, friends, pastor-member, member-to-member, leader-member, boss-employee, employee-to-employee, etc…..the list could go on and on. The point to be made and understood is that no matter what the relationship, a successful relationship begins and ends with respect.
The thing is respect is something different and unique to each individual. We are taught to treat others as we would or as one will treat his or herself. The problem is in theory that is the best thing, to treat people the way you want to be treated however; in too many cases that concept doesn’t really work. Every situation, every relationship is different. From relationship to relationship, respect is such a powerful and potent word that it can mean different things to different people.
Pet peeves, we all have them. They range from the way one acknowledges others to the words we say. It’s important to know and understand the pet peeves of those with you one relates to regularly. From co-workers to the people one dates, knowing the things that makes your mate tick, understanding the things that are forgivable and those not tolerated makes a relationship run smoother.
Is there a universal code for respect? Don’t you wish? Men think differently than women, the thoughts of the young are scary to say the least and as our society becomes more culturally diverse so too are the expectations and thoughts of what’s correct or appropriate. Lack of respect is definitely a deal breaker in any relationship. In fact, for a couple lack of respect makes love impossible. You cannot love anyone without giving him or her respect. With that in mind, take time, ask questions, and find out what RESPECT, means to the ones you love. Whether it’s addressing someone when you see them or acknowledging them with the proper greeting, RESPECT is too important to not be given.
